Amidst the mountainous setting of the Dandenong Ranges, we sought to do justice to the project at Upwey High School that not only celebrates the tranquil surroundings, but also promotes the school’s welcoming ethos. The proposed master plan aims for an ambitious addition of two new buildings, refurbishment of two existing buildings and the addition of a new gym building that includes state of the art facilities for performing arts and sport. While this stadium will boast an impressive presence on site, the scale of the trees and mountains allows the mass to be diluted and respect the context in which the design is situated.

Careful consideration is given to use of materials and its relationship with the surroundings. Use of almost industrial materials in conjunction with traditional brick, have been implemented to descale the large facilities even further, while internally new and existing buildings are designed to be welcoming and provide comfort in both winter and summer conditions.
